Canoes

Canoes are one of the oldest boats ever built, predating every other sea faring craft with the oldest known canoe being almost 10,000 years old. They are small, usually only big enough to hold two or three people, and symmetrical allowing for easy maneuverability in lakes and rivers. They are primarily river going craft, but can be used in many different water conditions from white water to smooth and calm lakes.

Canoes can be made from a variety of materials including aluminum, wood and canvas. Various plastics are widely used in modern canoe constructions with good results. The crafts are often lighter and stronger than their aluminum and wood counterparts and unlike aluminum they float easily without any extra buoys.

Canoes are a very popular recreational boat, but in the past were used primarily for travel, exploration, fishing and hunting. Larger ones can carry many people, some African war canoes reportedly held hundreds of men and were exceedingly long but still very narrow made from massive trees.
