Wood Canoe
Some of the most widely collected canoes are the wood canoe. They are typically made from cedar or birch and then surrounded with canvas to make them waterproof. The wood is shaped into ribs that form the structure of the boat, and then canvas is tightly wrapped around the bottom and sealed at the ends. This gives the boat a slight flex that allows for better maneuverability on the water.
Since a wood canoe is made entirely from natural and readily available materials it is easy to repair them, even in the field. The canvas can be replaced or stitched back together and individual ribs and other wooden parts can be repaired or replaced and refinished to look just like the original. Wooden canoes are the most beautiful canoes ever made.
A wood canoe does need more maintenance than an aluminum or plastic canoe, but they are well worth it. Keeping the paint and varnish intact is one of the best methods for protecting a wooden canoe, varnish is the first layer of defense. The canoe should also be stored in a dry, cool area. If well maintained these canoes can last many lifetimes, even in white water situations.
